Alan is a non practicing architect. He has decided to go back to his first love: drawing stuff. He has been drawing for as long as he can remember, first as an abstract impressionist using crayons on wall plaster, up to the present where he turns his attention to ink and paper.
I’ve been doing art professionally for about 2 ½ years now. I do mostly sequential art, concept art, and character illustrations.
What are some of your major art influences?
My early influences were sequential artists with the likes of Jim Lee and Marc Silvestri. Ever since I discovered Travis Charest, I became more interested in fine arts. I love studying fantasy paintings by Frazetta and Lockwood.
Great Filipino comics illustrators of the 60’s and early 70’s, such as Coching, Redondo, Dery and Nino have a great influence with my art also.
What are some of your major genre influences?
My favorite genre is fantasy. I’m always thrilled doing RPG and illustrations of epic scales. I am also interested with sci-fi and noir themed genres.
What sort of training/schooling/experience do you have with art?
I am a graduate of architecture from the University of the Philippines. Though initially I wanted to take up Fine Arts, circumstances prevented me from doing so. I’m trying to make up for lost time by reading lots of illustration books and how-to’s.
How did you become involved in Empty Room Studios?
I was contacted by Jeremy Mohler, another artist involved with ERS. I saw the portfolio of the other artists in the studio and decided that it’s a good place to grow as an artist.
