Art Gallery Hire this artist!
How long have you been an artist?
Roughly 30 years. Ever since doodling Spider-man on the dryer after seeing him on TV for the first time. Professionally, about 15 years on and off.
What are some of your major art influences?
Growing up it was the comic artists that influenced me the most - John Byrne, Frank Miller, Neal Adams, Barry Windsor Smith and Berni Wrightson in particular. More recently I've been enjoying the work of Mike Mignola, Travis Charest and my buddy Paul Pelletier. I've also recently started playing around more with color and concurrently have started looking at masters like NC Wyeth, Eastman Johnson and Norman price.
What are some of your major genre influences?
The American super heroes were my first, followed by horror, sci-fi and fantasy. Almost anything in pop-culture, really.
What sort of training/schooling/experience do you have with art?
I'm primarily self-taught. My early adventures with art-teachers were pretty antagonistic (nobody likes to be told their preferred style is "useless"), so I've just tried to learn what I could, from whom I could, where I could. Often I'll learn how to do something by jumping in and trying it out (inking with a brush comes to mind). Working with other artists has always been particularly enlightening.
How did you become involved in Empty Room Studios?
I became aware of ERS through my brother and was invited to join after doing a few different things for Jeremy and Rick. This is a great group of folks and I'm very pleased to be a part of it.
