Colin C. Throm - Illustrator, Graphic Designer
Empty Room Studios Members
I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. My grandfather was a master sculptor, and I grew up surrounded by art, nature, and classic children’s literature. I studied Art, Biology, and Anthropology in college. The scientific background helps me draw convincing creatures.

I've spent most of my life on a farm in Skillman New Jersey. My wife and I have recently moved into a new house, which we share with our tuxedo cat.

Though I have spent over a decade working professionally with computer graphics, design, and multimedia, for my illustration work I prefer to get my fingers dirty with pencil, paint, and ink. I am digitally savvy however, and have no problem working electronically, scanning, photographing, and doing my own design work.

How long have you been an artist?
Like most folks here, I've been drawing as long as I can remember. I've done a bit of irregular illustration since graduating college in 1990, and participated in a few group gallery shows in 2000 and 2001. I have only been freelancing on a regular basis.
What are some of your major art influences?
I grew up in a very artistic family. For early influences I have to credit my grandfather John Tanner Rooda (sculptor), and family friend Hendrick Glaeser (painter). I also have to credit my highschool art teachers Mr Ken Vieth (you can look him up on "Amazon" too) and Mr Dan Bush.

Here's a nice long (and yet incomplete) list of specific influences...
Rembrandt and Franz Hals
Albrecht Durer and Medival woodcuts
The paintings of Hieronymous Bosch and drawings of Peter Breughel
Dr Seuss
Asterix and Tintin
Frank Frazetta
Howard Pyle
Arthur Rackham
RL Neil
Maxfield Parrish
Alphonse Mucha
Ivan Biblin
George Herriman and Krazykat
Calvin & Hobbes
Windsor McCay
Will Eisner
Mercer Meyer
Hiroshige and the great Japanese printmakers
Alex Ross

I also owe a personal debt to Tim Hillebrandt for taking the time to talk with me... he literally changed the course of my life.

I'm currently hoping to follow in the footsteps of Tony DiTerlizzi, Brett Helquist, Patrick Woodroffe, David Wenzel, and Peter DeSieve - all wonderful illustrators that are masters at blending realism with cartoon and making it work.
What are some of your major genre influences?
I grew up on Asterix and Tintin comics, then later got into Marvel superhero comics. I eventually got tired of the superhero storylines and followed the more "adult" comics of Epic and Vertigo. I'm a big fan of 19th century illustration, and I also love children's fantasy books... Chronicles of Narnia, Lloyd Alexander, Mary Stewart, and JRR Tolkien (I consider "The Hobbit" to be children's fantasy anyway). I've also been heavily influenced by the art of (if not the actual playing of) tabletop RPGs.
What sort of training/schooling/experience do you have with art?
Oddly enough, my high school had a very good art program, which prepared me very well for college level art courses. After a bit of a false start, I graduated with a degree in "visual arts" from Rutgers University. I spent 2 years working as a personal/studio assistant with (then) SoHo artist Joyce Sills. I spent the next 6 months working in a photo lab and the past 13 years as an in-house graphic designer.
How did you become involved in Empty Room Studios?
I "met" Jeremy Mohler through rpg.net and later started working with him on Baeg Tobar. I became aware of Empty Room Studios through rpg.net and conceptart.org, but it wasn't until ERS and BT got together that I was asked to join.
