How long have you been an artist?
I know it's cliche' but pretty much my whole life. I started drawing when I was a wee lad and never stopped. My art "career" was just a natural progression from when I was doodling on the floor with my grandfather to present day.
What are some of your major art influences?
Well when I was young I was heavily influenced by all the old D&D guys; Jeff Dee, Erol Otus, Bill Willingham and my favorite comic book artists John Byrne and Stan Sakai. I went a long time drawing in a vacuum and not looking at anyone's stuff and I think that has a lot to do with my "style" now. Currently I'm influenced by many people, I'm always looking at art and seeking out new sources of inspiration (I'm addicted to art blogs). Art Adams, Oscar Chichoni and Dave Johnson are probably at the top of the list right now.
What are some of your major genre influences?
Well when I was in 2nd grade my Mom bought me the Rankin Bass "The Hobbit" record with accompaning storybook. That was pretty much the beginning of it all. I vividly remember sitting in my 3rd grade class with those big ass headphones on, listening to that album. I can pretty much recite it from start to finish to this day. Then after that, Mom bribed me to see Star Wars with candy and comic books (because I saw Logan's Run previously and it scared the shit out of me). After Star Wars, as they say, the rest was history.
What sort of training/schooling/experience do you have with art?
I was always taking all kinds of art classes growing up. I think that's a big reason I like to create in so many different mediums. I went to the Art Institute of Houston for college and graduated with a degree in Visual Communications. The Art Institute had shit for illustration classes and I was repeatedly discouraged from pursuing a career in illustration which I promptly ignored and did anyway. When we had our portfolio reviews for graduation I put all my illustration stuff in there and everyone was like "What the...? Where'd all this come from?" Since graduating I've done all kinds of different work from commercial storyboards, mural designs, children's book illustration, comic book work, animation, character design, etc... You name it, I've run the gamut.
How did you become involved in Empty Room Studios?
I met big man Jeremy Mohler at Wizard World Texas 2006. I loved his artwork and we quickly realized that we wanted to work together in some capacity. So after a few months of correspondence, here I am.
