How long have you been an artist?
I first started drawing around the same time I learned to use a crayon. I would say about 23 years now, but that would include scribbles on walls.
What are some of your major art influences?
As far as illustration, I would say Gustave Dore, Edmund Dulac, Arthur Rackham, and Stephen Gammel. My favorite comic book artists would include Neal Adams, Wally Wood, Harvey Kurtzman, Adam Hughes, Joe Chiodo, Paola Eleuteri Serpieri, Mark Texiera, John Buscema, Jim Steranko, and Mike Mignola.
What are some of your major genre influences?
My major genre interests have always been mythology and folklore. My father for some reason filled my head with greek mythology, norse legends, and japanese folktales. you do that to a kid and he'll spend his whole life searching for forgotten gods, splendid landscapes, and peaches that grant immortality.
What sort of training/schooling/experience do you have with art?
My earliest experience with art came in the form of lessons from my grandmother who guided me through the basic principals of pen & ink, oil and acrylic painting, and a fundamental understanding of what it is to be an artist. As a child I won the young authors award twice for books I both wrote and illustrated. As a teen I attended AP art courses, was art club president for 3 years, art director for Spindles the literary magazine, and chief editor of Graffiti art magazine. As I left highschool I was doing enough freelance work to support myself and have continued with it till now.
How did you become involved in Empty Room Studios?
As the founder of Empty Room Studios, I have been involved with ERS since day one. After several years of discussing the idea with publishers, art directors, and other industry artists I approached a handful of talented illustrators that I felt I could trust and would be honored to have my work beside. Over time, and as we began to take more work, I have had the privilege to invite many more talented individuals to become part of the growing family that is Empty Room Studios.
